Absent Souls by Dylan S Hearn

The first review for Absent Souls is in and I’m absolutely thrilled. Thank you so much for the well written and informative review, Dave. I’m really glad you enjoyed it.

Davetopia

Absent Souls by Dylan S HearnIn this sequel to Second Chance, Hearn has produced another post-cyberpunk tale that very definitely puts substance over style. While it does not skimp on interesting technology and racing action, this work runs on character not tech-porn.

As this is the second book in a series, this review might contain spoilers for the previous book.

The novel opens two years after the events of Second Chance, with the death of the Prime Delegate’s brother in the Shambles. Caught between being seen to help the authorities and being painted by the authorities as complicit in the death, crime boss Mike O’Driscoll needs to walk a tightrope just to stay still.

At first the appointment of Nico Tandelli, an investigator open to letting O’Driscoll save face, as lead on the murder case seems the break the crime boss needs; however, Nico is carrying out his own covert investigation into a…

Absent Souls – available to buy today!

Absent Souls - High Resolution

I am very pleased to announce that Absent Souls, the Transcendence Trilogy Book 2, is now available to buy on Kindle!

One death, two nations on the brink of war, and four people fighting the ghosts of their past.

Mick O’Driscoll has a problem. A man has died in the Scrambles, and nothing happens in the Scrambles without his permission, or so he thought. The death spells trouble and O’Driscoll knows it. The question is, who killed the Prime Delegate’s brother on his turf and why?

Set two years after the events of Second Chance, Absent Souls follows the story of four people struggling to deal with events in the present while tormented by events from the past: an Investigator, tortured by the memory of a man he couldn’t find and a crime he was unable solve; a crime lord, forced to live a life he inherited but never truly wanted; a Professor, using academic success to drown out his guilt; and a Global Governance operative, slowly becoming the very thing she’s fighting against.

Forced to work with those they distrust in an effort to uncover the truth, it soon becomes clear that it’s not just their own lives they need to protect, but the very future of humanity that’s at stake.

Absent Souls is the much anticipated follow up to Second Chance, which has over 30 reviews on amazon.co.uk at a 4.7-star average on amazon.co.uk. Here is what some reviewers had to say about Second Chance:

Ethical Author Code

I'm an Ethical Author

A couple of weeks ago the Alliance of Independent Authors announced the establishment of an Ethical Author Code in response to a general concern about the behaviour of some authors, both self-published and traditionally published. Like the vast majority of authors I know, I already follow the principles behind this code but I believe there is a real value in stating this more explicitly.

I would encourage any of my author friends to also publicly commit to this code. It doesn’t cost you anything, you aren’t signing up to an organisation, it is just a public declaration to behave responsibly and ethically in all aspects of your writing career.

To find out more, please either click on the image above or click on the link here.

Ethical Author Code

Guiding principle: Putting the reader first

When I market my books, I put my readers first. This means that I don’t engage in any practices that have the effect of misleading the readers/buyers of my books. I behave professionally online and offline when it comes to the following practices in my writing life:

Courtesy

I behave with courtesy and respect toward readers, other authors, reviewers and industry professionals such as agents and publishers. If I find myself in disagreement, I focus on issues rather than airing grievances or complaints in the press or online, or engaging in personal attacks of any kind.

Aliases

I do not hide behind an alias to boost my own sales or damage the sales or reputation of another person. If I adopt a pen name for legitimate reasons, I use it consistently and carefully.

Reviewing and Rating books

I do not review or rate my own or another author’s books in any way that misleads or deceives the reader. I am transparent about my relationships with other authors when reviewing their books.

I am transparent about any reciprocal reviewing arrangements, and avoid any practices that result in the reader being deceived.

Reacting to reviews

I do not react to any book review by harassing the reviewer, getting a third party to harass the reviewer, or making any form of intrusive contact with the reviewer. If I’ve been the subject of a personal attack in a review, I respond in a way that is consistent with professional behaviour.

Book Promotions

I do not promote my books by making false statements about, for example, their position on bestseller lists, or consent to anyone else promoting them for me in a misleading manner.

Plagiarism

I know that plagiarism is a serious matter, and I don’t intentionally try to pass off another writer’s words as my own.

Financial ethics

In my business dealings as an author, I make every effort to be accurate and prompt with payments and financial calculations. If I make a financial error, I remedy it as soon as it’s brought to my notice.

Responsibility

I take responsibility for how my books are sold and marketed. If I realise anyone is acting against the spirit or letter of this Code on my behalf, I will refer them to this Code and ask them to modify their behaviour.

Don’t feel bad, I want you to download my free book

2ndchance

I don’t know about you, but whenever I see an author running a free promotion I find myself in a dilemma. If I’m aware of a book promotion then the chances are I know of the author, or somebody I respect knows and likes the author’s work. And that’s where things get a little awkward.

On the one hand I would like to download the book. If I’ve heard of the book then it may well be a work I’m curious about but for whatever reason has never made it onto my reading list. It may be I’ve only just met the author and it’s on my wish list but below a number of other authors I’ve met earlier. It may even be a genre or style of book that I don’t usually read but I enjoy the author’s blog. Either way, I’m interested.

But

On the other hand, I’m a big supporter of my fellow writers. I buy a lot of books written by indie authors. I’m happy – and can afford – to pay for the book. So I always feel awkward about downloading a free offer because if I want to support my fellow writers as much as I say I do, I should wait and pay for the book once it returns to its normal price. That’s my dilemma, and it’s one that has particular significance over the coming days.

From Wednesday this week, Second Chance: the Transcendence Trilogy Book 1 will be available for free for five days, and I would love you to download it.

Yes, all of you.

Not only would I like you to download it, I would like you to do so without feeling the slightest twinge of guilt. And if you follow indie authors like I do, then I know some of you will have been tempted to download Second Chance in the past. So I ask you:

  • If you’ve been thinking about buying it but have never got around to it, download it on Wednesday for free.
  • If you’re curious about Second Chance but are unsure whether it’s your kind of thing, please download it and find out.
  • If you like my blog but don’t see yourself as a fan of science fiction, download it. Not only do you not have anything to lose, many readers who don’t usually read science fiction have enjoyed my book. Don’t take my word for it, have a look at some of the 30 reviews on amazon.co.uk.
  • And of course, if you find your love of books outstrips your ability to purchase them, then please help yourself with my thanks.

Because if you download my book for free you won’t be harming me, you won’t be stealing from me, you will be helping me. The most difficult thing for any indie author is visibility. By downloading my book you will be giving visibility. At first this will be in the free science fiction/cyberpunk charts, but if enough of you download it, my book will move to the more competitive science fiction/dystopian charts, the on to the main science fiction charts, each step bringing visibility to an even wider audience.

The more people who know it is available, the more chance it will be downloaded. Some of those people will read it and enjoy it, so much so they will want to read the second book in the trilogy, Absent Souls, which just happens to be published on Friday.

And even after Second Chance reverts back to its normal price, all those free downloads help contribute to its popularity rating, and an item’s popularity rating is the default sort order on an Amazon search.

So on Wednesday, please don’t be shy. Download my book for free. And if you’re feeling especially supportive, you could always read it and leave a review.

#Authors #Bloggers #Readers – Be aware of Intellectual Property Theft Laws!

A really important point for all bloggers and writers, not just to protect your own work but to have consideration for the work of others when quoting, re-blogging, using images, music or any other form of intellectual property.

Chris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

Intellectual Property Theft – a growing problem that hurts everyone in this writing business

By Susan M. Toy

Recently, I’ve become aware of the increasing amount of Intellectual Property (IP) theft that’s taking place online. It’s been happening for a long time: artists—visual, photographers, musicians and writers—seem only able to stand by and watch as what they have created is either copied and pasted elsewhere on the net without permission or no attribution at all is given for their work. Yes, there are copyright laws in place to protect us and the illegal use of our IP. But internet users seem unaware of these laws, or blatantly flout them, or truly believe that, whatever is on the Internet is free for their own personal use and by anyone who wants to copy and paste it into their status update or to their blog.

I’m going to speak specifically to the…

How to help Indie Authors – A Primer

Yes, yes and yes! Getting help from family and friends is fine, but as many of my blog readers know, I’m a big fan of us indie authors supporting one another, not just on blogs and promotions but by buying work by other indie authors and promoting those we enjoy. You can’t buy every book but even if every other book you purchase is an indie, it makes a big difference.

P.C. ZICK

Help an IndieHow to help Indie Authors – A Primer for family, friends, fans, and other Indie Writers

It’s not easy taking the route of Indie Author or any route as an author. The field is crowded, and it’s hard for readers to sift through it all. So in addition to writing, most of us Indies spend a great deal of time promoting our work. Most of us try not to annoy our friends and family, but it’s inevitable that many of them will see our promotional stuff. So as we move into the holiday season, I’d like to give some advice to anyone associated with an author. Also, there’s a little bit of advice for other authors as well. I wish you peace and relaxation during the coming season. Take the time to read a book, maybe even from an Indie Author in your life.

Besides buying the books of your…

10 ways to overcome NaNoWriMo procrastination

tomorrow

It’s just over the halfway point for those masochists lucky souls taking part in NaNoWriMo and while some participants are reeling off thousands of words a day, many of you (I say you because why are you reading this otherwise?) have hit a wall. Your initial enthusiasm has diminished, you’ve started to question whether the once incredible idea you had has any merit and you are left wondering why you ever bothered starting in the first place. But you’ve committed to the damn thing and you want to finish, so each day you turn on your computer ready to work. Then it hits. Something catches your eye and the next thing you know it’s midnight and all you’ve done is watch giggling babies on YouTube.

You are not alone. This happens to all writers, NaNo or no NaNo. To help, here are my 10 top tips to overcome procrastination (warning: some of these are less serious than others).

1 Stop reading blogs

I know, I shouldn’t have put this one first, but if this is the only tip you read and you act upon it, my job here is done

2 Turn off the internet

A more extreme version of the above, but if point 1 doesn’t help, point 2 will. You don’t need the internet to write. If you need to look something up, just write ‘look this up’ in your manuscript and carry on. It’s words on the page that are important, not accuracy at this point.

3 Set yourself a writing time and ensure all chores are completed beforehand

The only time you’ll ever find yourself driven by the desire to clean a toilet is when you’re struggling with your WIP. Make sure your chores are done before your scheduled writing time, or even better, get somebody else to do them for you.

4 Give yourself an even more important job to do

Procrastination is the art of doing something less important than the task you should be doing. The best way to overcome this is to give yourself an even more important task, then procrastinate over that by writing.

5 Buy yourself a pay-as-you-go dumb phone

It seems extreme but for many of you it’s not your computer but your cell phone that is the major procrastination enabler. You can buy very cheap dumb phones on a pay-as-you-go contract nowadays. Get one and leave your smart phone locked in a drawer for the next few weeks. Your word count will rocket!

6 Form an anti-procrastination group

Join up with fellow NaNoWriMo writers and put alerts on each other’s social media feeds. Whenever you receive an alert, send back a message saying “drop everything and write”.

7 Skip to a more exciting scene

Most of us write in the order each scene will appear in the book but it doesn’t have to be this way. If you are stuck on a scene, leave it and move on to one that’s more interesting to write. It will help keep the word count up and allow your brain to ruminate over the difficult scene until it works out a way forward.

8 Look back to where you were a week ago

Part of the reason for procrastination is a feeling you aren’t achieving anything. If this is the case, look back to where you were a week ago (or even two).  You’ll be amazed how much more you’ve achieved than you realised. If you have the ability to achieve what you have, you know you can do it all again.

9 A few words are better than no words

That daily word count goal can be both motivating and demotivating. It’s great when you get ahead of the curve but as soon as you drop behind the pressure ratchets up. If this is the case for you, think back to the reason you are taking part in NaNoWriMo. It’s not to hit 50,000 words (although that would be great). It’s to write a first draft. Every word you put on the page is one closer to this goal. So keep adding words, no matter how few, and you’ll be amazed how quickly they add up.

10 Remember Hemingway

One of the biggest reasons we procrastinate as writers is because we believe what we have written is no good. This is normal, especially with first drafts. So remember what Hemingway said: “the first draft of anything is shit.” If it applies to Hemingway, it applies to you.

Now stop reading and get back to your writing!

Still here? If you are, do you have any other hints and tips to help your fellow writers overcome the urge to procrastinate? I’d love to hear from you.
